The Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola, has provided reasons for the increase in tuition fees at the institution.
She cited the challenging economic conditions in Nigeria, which have significantly affected the university’s operational costs, as the primary cause of the fee hike.
Prof. Ogunsola also pointed to the diminishing financial support from the government as a contributing factor, stating that the university could no longer sustain its previous financial arrangements.
Reasons for fee increase and new fee structure
She explained that the university allocates substantial resources to various essential areas such as hostel maintenance, electricity and internet services, result verification, program accreditation, and the logistical requirements for hosting individuals who come for accreditation purposes.
The university administration recently revised the fee structure, setting it at N190,250 for students pursuing Medicine.
Courses requiring laboratory and studio resources have a tuition fee of N140,250, while programs that do not require such facilities are set at N100,750.
Before the increase, students at the institution were charged a tuition fee of N19,000, which had remained unchanged for 15 consecutive years.
Prof. Ogunsola emphasized that the university would continue to work on mitigating the impact of the fee hike on students, staff, and parents, ensuring that no student is forced to drop out due to the increase in fees.
