Guernsey students planning to move away for university or college are being advised to ensure their vaccinations are current before departing.
Public Health is recommending that students have received the MenACWY, MMR, and HPV vaccines, which offer protection against diseases like meningitis, septicaemia, measles, mumps, rubella, and certain cancers.
Protecting students health
The increased risk of contracting serious illnesses such as meningitis, septicaemia, and measles when students interact with peers from diverse international backgrounds makes it crucial for them to be immunized.
Students who have missed any of their routine vaccinations are encouraged to catch up by contacting the School Nursing team before leaving the island.
Alex Hawkins-Drew, associate director of Public Health, emphasized the importance of knowing one’s childhood vaccination history and taking appropriate measures to receive any necessary vaccines.
This proactive approach aims to safeguard the health of students and minimize the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases.
